Pro Choice rally against fundamentalist anti-abortionists

On Friday the 25th of January 2019, fundamentalist anti-abortionists – as usual – will walk through Munich. So far, they always stood in front of the information centre profamilia (Türkenstr. 103) to terrorize them. This time, though, we are standing there, starting at 11 o’clock, to proclaim our positions. We want a safe and simple access to pregnancy terminations and we want a society in which nobody gets pregnant against their will. With our rally, we want to encourage people and to break with the taboo of speaking about abortions. Furthermore we stand up against fundamentalist anti-abortionists who pester and terrorize unvolontariliy pregnant people in front of information centres and abortion clinics.

Come around, discover our table with informative material, drink tea with us and let’s chat a little bit. And when the anti-abortionists come around, let’s be so loud that God cannot hear their prayers.

We meet at 11 o’clock in front of Türkenstr. 103.

People who are eager to escort the fundamentalists during their prayer march through Munich can come to the St Paul’s Church (St. Pauls-Platz) at 10 o’clock.

Repression against protest against fundamentalist anti-abortionists once more

Every month – always on 25th – fundamentalist anti-abortionists led by Wolfgang Hering march through Munich. They pray and sing, but above all they promenade their reactionary conception of the world. They believe they can tell unvoluntarily pregnant people and pregnant people who consider a pregancy termination due to other reasons how to handle their situation. The solution praised by these fundamentalists is always the same: Pregnant people – for the anti-abortionists these ones are always women of course – have to keep their child. Thereafter the whole matter is settled for them.

Since the fundamentalist anti-abortionists consider themselves to be on a mission from God, they think that they are legitimised to accost supposedly pregnant people in front of reliable advice centres and to terrorise them. They call this “pavement counselling”. Likewise, their monthly protest usually leads the anti-abortionists among their wordly and spiritual leader Wolfgang Hering to such advice centres. They kneel down there and say the rosary. Wolfgang Hering chooses a prayer leader or leads the prayer  himself, the others follow with their prayer – not the official version of the Our Father, no, it is not awful enough, instead they pray a version that has been changed on various passages and thus sounds more god-fearing, such as “and deliver us from Hell’s purgatory”.

Actually, everybody is unnerved by the fundamentalists: residents, people working at the advice centre pro familia, passerbys and sometimes even the police …

Some activists have been opposing those so-called “vigils” for several months now. Even if they are rarely more than a handful who obstruct the fundamentalists, they are annoying as well. But fortunately only the fundamentalists and the police. The protest against the fundamentalists is mostly acclaimed by residents and passerbys, partly even actively supported.

Penalty notices against Pro Choice Activists

However, the police try to demoralize the protest againt the fundamentalist anti-abortionists with measures of repression. Again and again, they find a pretext with which they can charge activists opposing the fundamentalists with penalty notices. Repeatedly activists had been taken into custody for a short time, because the police apparently didn’t know how to handle the protest, in spite of a exaggerated number of officers on site. Repeatedly, completely new methods of repression have been tested.

E. g. one activist who had been taken into custody during a protest against the fundamentalists in front of the medicare Health centre in Freiham received a bill for 108 € to pay the “direct enforcement” the police officers used against her. “Direct enforcement” is nothing else than legally authorised police violence. For being hurt by police officers, the activist had to pay their working time wasted with such measures and possibly even “danger money”. The same activist, and at least one more person have been accused of disturbing the assembly. Therefore, the “Kreisverwaltungsreferat” [the municipal administration authority in Munich] has imposed a fine on them of 150 to 200 € plus procedural costs.

A breakfast on the pavement becomes a violation of the “street and path law” [a law existing only in Bavaria]

But this is not the first case in which the police finds random accusations against acitivists to intimidate them. At the moment, there are proceedings against five activists who are accused of violating the Bavarian “street and path law”. Concretely, they are said to have “camped” respectively had break-fast on the pavement. Numerous police officers among police inspector Nützel used this as an opportunity to accuse all present people of a corresponding offence [Ordnungswidrigkeit]. The police officers even took photos to prove that the food on the pavement made the pavement impossible to be used in its common way [Gemeingebrauch] any more. Nevertheless in the photos you can only see that many police officers obstruct the way on the pavement. Four activits received a penalty notive by the “Kreisverwaltungsreferat”of 100 € plus procedural costs.

These far-fetched accusations of the police show that they try to delegitimise the protest against anti-abortionists and to intimidate the affected activists. Presumably the responsible officers hope to discourage the activists so that they will once stop demonstrating against these fundamentalists.

For uns indeed, this is not an option. We will struggle against these attempts of repression by the police and we will continue to oppose the fundamentalist anti-abortionists. If you want to support us, obstruct the anti-abortionists with us. You find events on the webpage of Antisexistische Aktion München [Antisexist Action Munich] and on our website. Or you get to know us at one of our regular meetings.

Stop the march of Christian fundamentalists in Munich

We support the call for protests against the anti-abortionists among Wolfgang Hering on March 24th, 2018 by Antisexistische Aktion München:

  • 40 days of solemn vigil in front of the „medicare“-center in Munich-Freiham
  • monthly vigil with rally in front of pro familia
  • disgusting smear campaigns against doctors who offer pregnancy terminations
  • influence of radical anti-abortionists on political decisions
  • uncountable fundamentalist stickers praising Jesus Christ
  • and much more …

That’s enough! It’s time to show those “soul savers”, that we won’t accept their sexist, racist, transphobic and homophobic ideology any longer!

This is the reason why we call for protest against Christian fundamentalists on March 24th, 2018.

We will meet in front of “pro familia” in Türkenstraße 103
, 80799 Munich at 11 o’clock

Once more, Wolfgang Hering, the leader of the association “Helpers of God’s Precious Infants” in Munich, is calling for a so-called vigil on March 24th, 2018. At it, the ultra-religious anti-abortionists march through the inner-city of Munich to the advice centre “pro familia” and pray there. Usually, they have an ikon of Mary with them as well as signs that are designed to manipulate bystanders with messages distorting the circumstances of a pregnancy termination.

Groups like “Helper’s for God’s Precious Infants” deny women* their reproductive rights: so the woman* is not allowed to decide whether she* wants children neither how many of them, only God can take this decision. Their goal: the total ban of pregnancy terminations. As part of their campaigns and their actions, they call pregnancy termination murder, since in their world human life starts with the conception. To make their point, they partly resort to drastic methods. They use pictures with bloody fetuses, they accost women* as part of so-called “pavement counsellings” in front of advice centres and clinics,  distribute unrealisticly large embryos made of plastic or show signs with phrases like “Daddy, look, I’m a boy”. All this serves to put pregnant people even more under pressure in their already difficult situation.

The fundamentalists do not care that they use völkisch-right wing rhetoric. The Nazis already used the female body for their propaganda. There is talk of “the womb as germ cell of the nation” or that “the nation dies in the womb”. In this narrative, women* are reduced to their role as mothers who have to produce as many healthy children as possible. Hence, it is no wonder that extreme right-wing activists feel quite comfortable in the orbit of self-appointed “soul savers”  and that they find ideological links with them.

Bavaria – a place for antifeminists – no place for antifeminists

For decades down to the present day, Bavaria has been led by conservatives, and antifeminist and reactionary groups feel quite well in this federal state. Parties like CSU, AfD or Zentrum are active as well as evangelical and Christian fundamentalists or “Pro Life” organisations like AlfA, CDL or 1000 Plus, the latter of which even moved from Heilbronn to Munich.

Among themselves and beyond Munich these groups are partly well interconnected. For instance, Wolfgang Hering, prayer leader of the “Helpers for God’s Precious Infants” in Munich, made a public appearance with Klaus Günther Annen, one of the most active anti-abortionists in Germany, at a vigil in Münster. Annen relativises the Shoah on his website “” and litteraly boasts about against how many doctors he already pressed charges.

Currently, probably the most prominent victim of his smear campaign is the doctor Kristina Hänel from Giessen who has been imposed a fine of 6,000 € on, because she has been charged with contravening § 219 a [this paragraph bans publicity for pregnancy terminations]. Annen, though, might not be very happy, because Dr. Hänel wouldn’t hide herself, but is leading a public discussion. Her commitment and the following wave of solidarity have revived a public and lively debate on pregnancy terminations that for a long time had fallen asleep.

We would like to resume this debate with our protest on March 24th. We demand the abolition of the paragraphs 219 and 218 StGB [the German penal code].  Not only informing about pregnancy terminations, even pregnany terminations themselves are still liable to prosecution in Germany and are just not prosecuted because of a lousy additional article (§ 218 a). This deprivation of the right of decision and this patronization are intolerable. We won’t accept them any longer.

Let us take a stand against reactionary antifeminist smear campaigns and for self-determination. Let us face the anti-abortionists and let us show them what we think of their prayers.

It is in our hands to prevent Munich from becoming a comfortable place for Christian fundamentalists and radical anti-abortionists. And this is why we call upon you to protest against this sexist shit with us on March 24th.

We will meet in front of “pro familia” in Türkenstrasse 103, 80799 Munich at 11 o’clock

Yours sincerely,

Antisexistische Aktion München [Antisexist Action Munich]

Please be aware that there might be repression by the police and that the cops will try to prevent and criminalize our protest.
